Choosing a Cover Image for Your Instagram Reel Before Posting

The cover image acts as the initial point of contact for viewers browsing a profile grid or feed after a short informational video is ready. Choosing something clear and relevant can influence whether someone stops to watch the content or keeps scrolling. Instagram provides the ability to select a frame from the video directly or to upload a separate custom image, but that menu may not be obvious to someone not specifically looking for it during the final review steps.

Accessing the cover selection happens on the last posting screen, just before tapping the final share button. Skipping this step causes Instagram to pick a frame by itself, often from the video’s mid-section. That automatically chosen frame might show a simple pause screen or another visually unhelpful moment in the case of informational content, meaning the profile display improves noticeably with even a small manual adjustment.

Opening the Cover Option on the Final Post Screen

After adding the video clips, effects, text, and audio, tap the Next button in the bottom right corner. Doing so takes you to the final sharing screen where you add a caption, tags, and location. Directly below the video preview, a row of small circles labeled “Cover” appears. Tap that row to open the cover selection menu. When the Cover option is not immediately visible, scroll down slightly on the sharing screen. It sits between the video preview and the caption field.

Tapping it opens two choices: “Use Frame” and “Add from Camera Roll.” The first choice lets you scroll through the video timeline and pick any frame. The second choice lets you upload a custom image you prepared separately.

Selecting a Frame or Uploading a Custom Image

Choosing “Use Frame” brings up a timeline below the video preview. Drag your finger across the timeline to scrub through the video. Stop at a frame where the main subject, text overlay, or key visual is clearly visible. Tap “Done” to confirm that frame as the cover. Working well when your video has a strong opening moment or a clear title card, this method is straightforward. Choosing “Add from Camera Roll” opens your photo library.

Select an image that matches the 9:16 aspect ratio of the reel. The image should be readable at a small size because it appears as a thumbnail on the profile grid. After selecting the image, you can pinch to adjust the crop. Tap “Done” to confirm. Useful when your informational video starts with a blank intro or a quick movement that does not freeze well, this option provides flexibility.

Checking the Cover Before Sharing and Adjusting Later

After you confirm the cover, the preview on the sharing screen updates to show the selected image. Look at the preview as it would appear on your profile grid. When the text is cut off, the subject is too small, or the image looks blurry, tap the Cover row again and choose a different frame or upload a better image. Do not tap Share until the cover preview looks clear and readable. After posting, if the cover does not look right, you can change it later. Open the reel from your profile, tap the three-dot menu, and select “Edit.” Tap the cover preview and repeat the same selection process.

The updated cover replaces the old one on the profile grid and in the feed. A helpful habit for informational reels where the first impression matters for viewer trust and clarity, checking the cover before sharing is worthwhile.
